Apache National Forest

Reserve is the seat of Catron County, one of the largest and yet least populated counties in the nation. Mild climate and beautiful scenery attract new residents and visitors alike. Being surrounded by national forest also makes us a popular destination for many outdoor activities.

In the 1860s, Mexican-Americans came into the area and established a string of villages along the San Francisco River which they named the Upper, Lower and Middle San Francisco Plazas.

Parts of the Gila National Forest, the Apache National Forest and the Cibola National Forest all lie within Catron County, with the Apache Forest bordering our town. These natural refuges are the primary attraction in the region, drawing thousands of hikers, fishers, campers and of course, hunters.
